According to British researchers, when chemotherapy is combined with eating cabbage and Brussels sprouts, you can kill the cancer cells growing in your body. At least this is what their new research shows.

University of Leicester conducted this study and the evidence was then presented at the National Cancer Research Conference held in Britain in 2006. Yes, this was proven 2 years ago that a compound called indole-3-carbinol, also known as I3C, present in cabbage and Brussels sprouts, is very effective in fighting cancer as long as it combined with chemotherapy.

Indole-3-carbinol is found in all vegetables belonging to the cruciferous family. This means that it also found in cauliflower and broccoli. Researchers from the University of Leicester found that cauliflower and broccoli made the cancerous breast tumors more receptive to chemotherapy drugs and this played a major role in making chemotherapy a success.

The researchers at the University too breast cancer cells and exposed them 300 mg to 400 mg of indole-3-carbinol, which is around a shopping cart full of cabbages! They found that the cancer cells could then be easily killed by the chemotherapy drugs.

The trials are still in early stages and it will be a while before indole-3-carbinol can be used as an integral part of chemotherapy treatment. And when it does become available, it will be highly beneficial especially for patients suffering from colon cancer and women suffering from breast cancer. Indole-3-carbinol will allow doctors to reduced the dosage of chemotherapy drugs and as a result the associated side effects will also be low.
